Outlook problem viewing MAPI List on Japanese Client

Windows Vista/7 finally adds support for having multiple languages for the menu system which should have been included way back in the Windows XP era.

Anyways to the problem.  This applies to computers with the Japanese language pack installed.  However, it might apply to other systems using multi-byte fonts.  When you try to view the (default) “All Address Lists” and such they will appear empty.   The Windows XP/Office 2003 machines would show the MAPI listing with no problems.  However, all the Vista/Win7 machines either with Office 2003 or 2007 would not show anything in the MAPI listing.  After trying several things, I found the solution and it was so simple.   If your location is set to Japan/Japanese you need to change the way that Windows is doing the lookup inside of the region properties from doing XJIS lookup to Radical/Stroke lookup.  You’ll be able to see your global lists again.

The process goes as follows:

Regional and Language Options > Formats (tab) > “Customize this format…”

Region and Language Settings Screen

Region and Language Settings Screen

Customize Regional Options > Sorting (tab)

Change XJIS to Radical/Stroke

Customize Regional Options

Christmas brings out the best…

In Japanese girls apparently.

An article over at Japan Times spells out the “wonderful” story of some of the locals here.

Yet another interesting way to learn English

For all Japanese people out there, here is an English lesson that you might find less than helpful.  (But funny, and maybe better to not watch at the office or at least with headphones)

Hamasaki Ayumi then and now. 浜崎あゆみ前と現在はちょっと違うな~

I was going through a bunch of files on my harddisk seeing if there was anything that I needed to delete and came across some old pictures that I downloaded from somewhere I don’t remember anymore now. But hey, I’m glad I saved them because now I can share it with you.

As we all know, Hamasaki Ayumi is a very famous singer in Japan. But she wasn’t always like that. Here are a few pictures of what she looked like before she made it as a singer.

Japan Wants to go Opensource

The Japanese government wants to go open source, as a way to rely less on a single vendor IT software infrastructure. And plenty of vendors are lining up to help make this happen.

Japanese MAGLEV Train

Wow, this is fast. If you forward to about 5 minutes into the video you can see the good part where the train wooshes by and also listen to the cool sound that it makes as well.  The max this train gets in the video I can see is 500km/h, but apparently it can top out at 512km/h.  But when you’re traveling that fast, who cares about the other 12km/h?

Cat Crap Coffee 猫うんこのコーヒー豆

Wow this?  A new type of coffee.  Australians are the first to get it, but this expensive coffee bean that comes from the cat’s ass is apparently producing some good coffee according to this article.
